Anand Shukla became Brightside’s Chief Executive in 2015.
He is a member of the Higher Education Funding Council for England’s (HEFCE) Strategic Advisory Committee on Teaching Excellence and Student Opportunity and also sits on the Universities UK practitioner advisory group on social mobility. He has written for the Guardian and WonkHE on issues relating to social mobility and widening participation, and speaks regularly at national conferences on access and outreach.
Anand is a member of the Speakers for Schools network which provides state schools and colleges with talks from industry leaders who share their experiences with young people to broaden students’ horizons and motivate them to reach their full potential. He is a non-executive director of the Social Investment Business and an advisor to Independence ZA – a South African charity that provides financial support to disadvantaged young people so that they can enter higher education.
Prior to joining Brightside, Anand was the Chief Executive of Family and Childcare Trust where he campaigned for greater childcare provision and funding, and advised governments in Westminster, Edinburgh and Cardiff on family and childcare policy.
Anand was selected to be a Clore Social Leadership Fellow in 2012.
